Spitting Image: Part 2


This is the second set of similar covers I have in my collection, for now it will also be the last one until I get some more that match, or I notice a pattern I haven't seen before. These covers are less visually similar than the last ones and a bit more in the concepts.

Woods of Ypres - Woods 5 Grey Skies & Electric Light : Wormrot - Voices

Head in hands with an ink drawn look, a single colour used lightly these two took me as similar in appearance and concept, while also being very different in what they say to me. Wormrot is a Singaporean grindcore band considered luminaries in the genre with an intense sound that can also find a way to be catchy. Woods of Ypres were from Canada and they played blackened doom, this is their final juno-award winning album. Between the recording and the release of this album David Gold, band leader and only consistent member, was killed in an automobile accident. The other members declined to continue the band without him.

Skin Totem - Weltschmerz : Toundra - (III)

Here we have cartoon girls with skulls in weird circumstances, bonus points for neither album including a name or logo anywhere on the front cover. The most visually different covers in the series I think, but I also wonder how many albums include those three basic concepts. Skin Totem plays grindy hardcore and they are Swedish, this limited edition of the album is transparent green. Toundra is a Spanish instrumental metal/post-rock outfit. I really like this album and I'm glad I found it online and listened to it first so I knew it when I saw it, because this album does not have the band or album name anywhere on it, not on the cover, not on the spine, not on the record label, and there is no insert.

Wayfarer - Old Souls : Anciients - Heart of Oak

Hey it's Wayfarer again! This time we are seeing beings with dream-catcher-like heads, once again the colour palettes are not dissimilar with browns and sepia being the major look in both, with Wayfarer going significantly darker. Wayfarer are playing their lightly atmospheric black metal with less influence from the American west on this album. Anciients are a Canadian proggy, deathy, doom unit and this is their debut album from 2013.

Baptists – Beacon of Faith Is sludgecore a sub-genre? Should it be? I'm not sure, but what I do know for sure is that when thick fuzzy sludge metal meets aggressive hardcore a wonderful thing is born. Baptists are from Vancouver, BC and have crafted an excellent and precise blend of some of my favourite sub-genres. They popped up onto my radar a few months ago when I was looking for some new music, an excited murmuring was spreading over the internet about their new album prompting me to give their older material a listen, I liked what I heard quite a lot so I kept an eye on the new release rack for this record to appear. Beacon of Faith is Baptists third and most recent album, the sticker on the packaging proclaimed it to be their “third attempt at a first album”, which seemed like an odd statement to me. Vinyl Update

Got some new stuff to share today, pretty stoked about this lot of records so let's take a look Zeal & Ardor - Stranger Fruit Really happy to have picked this one up. It was not available in any of my local record stores (that I could find) so when I heard about them coming to play here in town I grabbed a ticket right away. This is their newest album that they are touring to support and it is garnering a lot of praise from all over the internet. They play a unique blend of Scandinavian black metal and slave spirituals from the American south, it is really something else and very good.  Zeal & Ardor - Devil is Fine This is Zeal & Ardor's first full length album from a few years back. I was originally planing on just buying their new record, but their live set was really amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed every song they played so when I went to the merch table I picked up a copy of this one as well. Black Sails for Red Seas – Chasing Giants Who needs a singer anyway? Like seriously? Always hogging all the attention, acting like they're in charge, running around on stage making a scene, trying to sleep with all your fans, what good are they? Of course; I kid, a good vocalist can be key to a bands sound, but these guys have decided to do away with the idea all together. Black Sails for Red Seas (BSRS) is a post-rock/instrumental metal group from Montreal, QC. I discovered this band at the record store while looking for some good post-rock, I had just been looking through the selection of Pelican records (an awesome instrumental band), unable to find what I was wanting, when I spotted this album on the featured rack. The sticker on it proclaiming it ideal for fans of Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles, and, as it happens, Pelican. That was enough to convince me, and they're a Canadian band so all the more reason to pick it up and give them some support.
